Living Waters to Sponsor Iron Fly Competition

May be an image of 1 person and text

Living Waters is excited to sponsor the inaugural Honey Hole Angling Iron Fly Competition this coming Saturday in New Braunfels! We’ll be providing materials, and Chris will be presiding as judge over the competition.
Proceeds from the event benefit Reel Recovery, a national non-profit that conducts free fly fishing retreats for men battling with all forms of cancer in an effort to introduce them to the healing powers of the sport of fly-fishing, while providing a safe, supportive environment to explore their personal experiences of cancer with others who share their stories. Reel Recovery provides cancer information and resources to enable better management of their disease and new skills to bring joy, enthusiasm and renewed hope as participants confront the challenges of their cancer survivorship.
Registration for the Honey Hole Iron Fly is required for competitors only. Bystanders, hecklers, and back-seat-tyers are all welcome free of charge. Come out to enjoy food and drinks, live music, a silent auction and raffles, some friendly competition, and more!

Orthodontic rubber bands

Tending Your Tags: Troutbitten.com
These little orthodontic rubber bands are a great idea for adjustable tag or hook tenders _ image via troutbitten.com Really cool little tip for cleaning up your fly fishing rig and swinging hooks for travel, via a car, boat or on foot from Dom over at Troutbitten.com. I don’t miss hook keepers on fly rods, since pretty much all of my fishing is done with 9′ fly rods and 10′ plus leaders and I’m fussy about winding fly line back in through the rod tip….
When I use a strike indicator I also use these rubber bands to connect my “thingabobber” onto my leader. You can still slide it up and down the leader but it will not “kink” your leader. I do use a hopper type fly more for my indicator, but if it is windy, I am too clumsy to throw three fly’s, or if I want to get two fly’s down deeper, then I do use an indicator. If you do use this rubber band method, remember to change the band every day, they will degrade and they will and you will see your indicator sailing down river.
You can go to a craft store and get what they call “loom bands”, for bead looms, they work the same, a bit larger and cheaper.

Egan’s Rainbow Warrior

Egan’s Rainbow Warrior

First developed by fly fisherman Lance Egan of Utah, the Rainbow Warrior has become a classic fall fly pattern for trout fishing. According to Egan, “I don’t know why it works, not really sure what the fish think it is, but it does work.”

Trout season is coming up here on the Guadalupe, and this is a fly that works. Though I can say it works for me year around. I have been catching all sorts of bass and pan fish all summer long with this in a size #20.
