Minutes of NBFF Membership Meeting
06/28/2023 – New Braunfels Public Library
Pat McQuinn called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm at the New Braunfels Public Library.
Pat McQuinn reported that membership was the same as reported in June of 42.
Gary Nyland reported that the fly tying group tied clousers in their last class. The next class is scheduled for July 6th and they will be tying a top water fly such as a parachute adam.
Ed Sweet reported that the club now has 1821 followers on Facebook. This is a increase from last month’s 1807. Some new fly tying video’s have been posted to the fly tying page, so check out the web page. (this was added after the meeting)
Ron DeMeyer stated that the Blanco River trip was a success with 7 club members and their kayaks all catching fish. Also, the trip to Living Waters Fly Shop in Round Rock was a good trip. Chris Johnson presented fishing in Southern Colorado. There are no outings scheduled over the summer, just too hot.
Ron DeMeyer gave an update on the fish feeding project to date. The water temps are increasing and the trout activity is decreasing. Martin Stults and Ron Lucik are feeding this week and Martin confirmed the activity is down from just a few weeks ago. Temps up to 74 at Little Ponderosa and they saw only one fish there. The group will need to consider dropping Little Ponderosa from the schedule if the activity remains low to none at this site.
Ron DeMeyer brought two samples of the embroidered hats with the club logo for the membership to comment on. The hats were well liked and a decision after a vote was taken was to order 3 dozen. The order will be split equally between 3 colors and should be available by the next club meeting. The hats will sell for $25. Initially the hats will be sold to the membership and then to the public as well.
A silent auction was held in lieu of the fly raffle. The items Chris Jackson had received from an unknown gentleman were put up for auction. This included a number of bamboo rods, a couple of creels, automatic return reels and some other miscellaneous items. All of the items were sold with the exception of two rods.
Thanks to Martin Stults and Ron DeMeyer for organizing the auction. The amount made by the club will be reported after the proceeds are counted. In addition the plan for the two rods that did not sale is to put them up on eBay.
Our speaker was Jim Gray from Austin. Jim’s presentation was on fly fishing the Llano River. Jim considers the Llano River to be the best river in Texas for fly fishing with possibly the exception of the Devils River. Jim also presented his favorite flys for the different species that he ties himself. If anyone is interested in contacting Jim he can be reached by:
