Fly Tyers Meeting

For our next NBFF fly tyers meeting on Tue. Dec. 11 we will be expanding our varieties on the Teeny Nymph Fly that we began on our first fall meeting. This is a simple fly with several variations.   We will be tying variations adding rear legs, wings, tails, bead heads and Crystal Flash to the hackle section.  This should be a good fly for the upcoming trout season.  The meeting will be from 7-9 pm at the American Legion Post on 410 W. Coll Street in New Braunfels.  You may bring your own tying equipment or the club can supply you with the needed tying equipment, if needed.

Svend’s Leech

Fly of the Month – Svend’s Leech

Thanks to Svend for tying one up in Christmas colors!

A variation of a Leech and a Bugger using mostly marabou and flash to try and fool a fish. Jack Gartside’s soft hackle Leech is the closest pattern I could find to what I am trying to accomplish. A few differences are the Ice Dub body, and using a dubbing loop to spread out the marabou, and of course a weighted tungsten bead. I really like the results and I know the fish will too.

Materials list:

Hook: StealthHook N series or Mustad R73-9671 tied in sizes 8-12
Bead: Tungsten bead to fit hook size
Thread: Semperfli Nano Silk 100 D
Tail: Marabou Fiber with added flash.
Body: Semperfli Ripple Ice or Hareline Ice Dub
Ribbing: Nature’s Spirit Premium Bugger Bou spun in a dub loop

November 27th Meeting Speakers

Our November meeting will be held on the Tuesday, November 27th, at 7:00 pm at the New Braunfels Public Library.  Our speakers for the evening will be Chase Smith and Robby Hensley. Their presentation will cover a low-budget trip to Baja, Mexico to target Roosterfish in the surf.

A quote from Michael Aldridge, Education Chair for Texas Council FFI and Outings Director, Hill Country Fly Fishers, from an email response to my request for him to speak (He was busy):

“There are a couple of young, incredible fly anglers here with the Hill Country Fly Fishers club that might be able to help with a presentation if you’re still looking for a speaker on November 27.  They are Chase Smith and Robert Hensley.  The second to last Drake Magazine mentions them both as winners of the last two “Escarpment” carp tournaments.  Chase ties some of the best articulated flies, “game changers,” I’ve ever seen! Both are wonderful young men who’ve done more with a fly rod in one year than most have in a lifetime!  From the Texas Hill Country to CO/NM to Baja.”

Hope to see you all there!!
