NBFF Minutes from 5/22/24 meeting, lots of info

Minutes of NBFF Membership Meeting

5/22/2024

Pat McQuinn called the meeting to order at 6:10 pm at the New Braunfels Public Library.

Treasurer’s report = Brien John reported a club has a positive balance.  Brien also reported that he has developed a draft budget.  Brien reported the primary expenditures for the club are the GRTU Youth Camp, FFI insurance premium, website renewals and guest speakers.

Fly-Tying report = Gary Nyland reported the last class had 11 in attendance.  The next will be June 6th at the West Side Community Center from 6 – 8.  He is planning that we will be tying a chubby chernobyl.

Membership report = Pat McQuinn reported that the club roster was unchanged from last month with 48 active members.  Leon Bishop has decided to drop out of the club which dropped the membership to 47.  However, Mark Fillman has joined the club which brings the membership back up to 48.   Pat reminded folks to check their FFI expiration dates and renew as needed and to please let him know so the club roster can be update.

Education = Chris Long was not in attendance so we did not have an education report.

Website = Ed Sweet was not in attendance but did report earlier that the website and Facebook are working properly.

Outings = Ron DeMeyer was not in attendance but did report earlier that the outing on Wednesday May 15th at #5 was a success.  Ed Finger, Tom Yonko, Bo Lewis, Gary Nyland, Pat McQuinn and Ron attended.  All attendees caught fish and the burgers at Horseshoe Grill were good.  The second outing on Saturday May 18th at Rio Guadalupe was not well attended.  Jerry Horton reported that he along with Gary Nyland and Ron were the only attendees.  Ron caught a couple at the midway ripple and they lost a couple.  They were then joined by a bachelor party of 12 and 4 guides.  At that point they decided to go have a BBQ lunch.

No future outings are currently scheduled.

Club Survey = Pat reported that Eric Weissgarber had done some research on the local Boy Scouts and their Fly-Fishing Merit Badge.  Before NBFF members can assist the Boy Scouts they first must be certified counselors.  This will take some research to determine the requirements.  Eric did provide the phone # of the local Scout Master.  Pat is going to contact this person to see if we can get some guidance on the way forward.

Fish Feeding Program = The feeding program is now working.  We are seeing lots of fish  We are also seeing blue herons at all the feeding locations and a bald eagle.  It has been reported that there is a pair of bald eagles nesting on the river.  We currently have 14 volunteers.  Volunteers are booked for May & June.

Speaker = Cassio Silva of All Water Guides was our guest speaker.  Cassio’s topic was the Guadalupe Bass, the Texas state freshwater fish native to Texas.  Cassio presented how to identify a Gudalupe Bass from large mouth, small mouth and spotted bass.  Cassio went into detail about the habits of the different bass, where to find them and the flies he uses to catch them.  Cassio’s presentation was very interesting, entertaining, and well received.

You can contact Cassio at:

Fly Raffle = Jerry Horton conducted the fly raffle.

June’s club meeting = Wednesday June 26th will be our next club meeting.
