SEPTEMBER FLY FISHING REPORT

To all who’ve recently subscribed to our newsletter: Thank you for joining!
It has been a great summer for fly fishing. The temperatures are about to drop as the fall season approaches. The changing seasons will increase different bug hatches. The fish bite will also increase as we get closer to the brown trout spawn. The annual rainbow trout stocking has already occurred on the Gunnison river. Some cooler temps and cloud cover should make for some great streamer fishing. September is a great time to book a Colorado trip to experience some epic dry fly fishing.

It’s also a good time to reserve your dates for fall and winter in Texas. We’ll be targeting bass through October and November, then trout late November through April. August 26th meeting and September 20th meeting

This is a reminder that our August’s club meeting will be on the river Saturday the 26th at 8:00 AM.  Location is River Acres Park, 501 Fair Ln, New Braunfels just off E. Commons. We met here last summer.
There will not be a formal meeting.  Bring your rod and practice casting and do some fishing.
8:00 AM is to beat both the crowds and the heat.
Ron will be selling the new club logo hats if you haven’t gotten yours.
September’s meeting will be on Wednesday September 20th at 6:00 PM.  We will be back at the New Braunfels library on Commons. The meeting is a week early because the Comal County Fair is the following week and due to parking the Library asked us to consider either an earlier time or the 20th.   Nathan Pence of GBRA will be our guest speaker.  He is going to make the presentation he presented to GRTU at their last zoom meeting.  The topic is the Guadalupe watershed and the impact of the drought.
Mark your calendar for September 20th.  Bring your better half, neighbor, etc.  The meeting will be very informative.
Thanks,
Pat

Oktoberfisch 2023 cancelled

Well this is a first for me at least, a solar eclipse putting a damper on fishing

Where & When

The Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, annular solar eclipse will cross North, Central, and South America. It will be visible in parts of the United States, Mexico, and many countries in South and Central America.

Minutes of NBFF Membership Meeting 07/26/2023

Minutes of NBFF Membership Meeting

07/26/2023 – Preiss Heights Park

Pat McQuinn called the meeting to order at 5:00 pm at Preiss Heights Park.

Thanks to John Wortham for making the arrangements for the club to meet at the neighborhood park on the Guadalupe River.  It is a beautiful section of the river.

Ron reported that the silent auction was a success.  There are 2 rods remaining that will be placed on eBay in the coming weeks.  Both of these rods are collectible bamboo and will add value to someone’s collection.

A big thanks went out to Ron and Jerry for all the work that went into developing the club hats.  Ron brought the hats to the meeting and folks were very pleased with the final product.  We have 3 colors to choose from and the logo looks great.  Ron will bring them to our next club meeting in August.  Hats are $25.

Brian reported that the club has a positive balance.  This month the club paid our insurance premium to FFI.  Our only club fund raiser will be the Hold Over Tournament scheduled for November 4th.  This will be an opportunity for the club to deposit some needed funds back into the account.  We are hoping that the membership will support the event.  Details of the tournament will be emailed and posted to our website.

Pat McQuinn reported that membership was the same as reported in June of 42.  Discussion followed on how to increase the participation of the membership at our club meetings, outings, etc.  It was suggested by Cheryl that a survey be developed asking for suggestions, ideas, etc.  This survey will be developed and distributed with hopes of some good ideas.

Gary Nyland reported that the next fly-tying class will be August 3rd, 6:00 PM at the Westside Community Center.  He will be sending an email out with further details.

John Wortham and Ed Finger are feeding the fish this week and gave an update.  The fish were active from Maricopa down to the Patio Pool but the activity at #5 has slowed.  They did go down to the S Curve and saw only a couple of fish which further supports the decision to drop this location from the program.  Detailed report for the week to follow.

Pat asked the group if there were any topics of interest concerning future guest speakers, suggestions, etc.  There were two suggestions.  One was to have the Manager of WORD make a presentation to update the club on their activities and efforts specific to conservation and protecting the fishery.  Pat will make the contact.  Kandie suggested approaching Carie Rey who is a FFI certified casting instructor, guide and member of the Texas Women Fly Fishers.  Kandie knows Carie and will make that contact.

Next club meeting will be Saturday, August 26th at 8:00 AM at the River Acres Park on the Guadalupe across from the Public Library.  We will have a short business meeting and then get in the river for fishing and to practice casting.  8:00 AM is scheduled to beat both the heat and the crowds.

We then enjoyed a cold beverage of choice, fish stories and some of us did some wade fishing.
