December 2024 Fly Fishing Report
To all who’ve recently subscribed to our newsletter: Thank you for joining!
Winter is here! The temperatures have dropped and it’s a great time to get outdoors.
It’s a good time to reserve your dates for winter and spring in Texas. We’ll be targeting trout through April, and bass March through May. Check out http://actionangler.net/ to book a trip, buy some gear or gift certificate, or get up to speed on the latest river info.
RIVER CONDITIONS
The water temperatures on the Guadalupe are in the 60s. The flows on the Guadalupe below Canyon Lake are 65 CFS. There have been 4 trout stockings so far, and more on the way. Trout sizes stocked this season are anywhere from 8 inches to 27 inches. The GRTU feeding program has helped a good number of trout to survive the summer, and the best way to know if you have a holdover is by the color and fin development. The Canyon Lake level is 20 feet low and flows could reduce more if rainfall doesn’t increase. We recommend visiting http://www.grtu.org/flow/ to stay informed of the lake level and dam release. The trout have been biting on various worm, egg, nymphs, and emerger patterns. Some streamers have also been successful.
Please contact us if you want to experience some great Colorado or Hill Country fly fishing. Guided trips and gift certificates can be purchased online at http://actionangler.net/ by clicking the “BOOK NOW” button.

The Action Angler fly shop and river access is open 7 days a week. Purchases can be made through our website at any time of the year. We have added 2 more ways to pay for river access. Look for the orange sign at the trail head with payment options through Zelle, and Venmo.

2024-2025 Trout Stocking Schedule
2024-2025 Trout Stocking Schedule
Harvest Regulations
- No Minimum Length Limit; Daily Bag = 5 trout
- Exceptions exist within special trout management zones on the Guadalupe River downstream of Canyon Lake, which often remains cool enough for rainbow trout to survive year-round
- An angler fishing in a Community Fishing Lake (CFL) or from a dock, pier or jetty within a Texas State Park may use no more than two poles.
- Special limits are in effect on parts of the Guadalupe River.
License Requirements
- Trout anglers will need a valid fishing license that includes a freshwater fishing endorsement. Anglers under 17 years of age are not required to have a license. More about fishing licenses and stamps.
- Licenses and endorsements are not required when fishing within a Texas State Park.
If you’ve never been trout fishing, here are some how-to tips.
Locations and Dates
Dates and locations are subject to change. Most trout stocking occurs between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Exact times are unavailable. Total quantity is distributed over the scheduled stock dates. Hatchery is the TPWD facility delivering the trout. Hatchery contact information is listed below this chart.
Neighborhood Fishin’ ponds (marked with * ) will be stocked frequently throughout the season.
Nov. 27 marks the beginning of a Texas winter tradition as we begin stocking thousands of easy-to-catch, tasty rainbow trout in ponds, lakes and rivers across the state. Any age or skill level can enjoy the thrill of fishing for rainbows. To increase your chances of success, our biologist created a video with 6 tips for catching rainbow trout. TPWD plans to stock 342,373 rainbow trout in Texas from Nov. 27 through March 9. Because rainbow trout are unable to survive in most areas of Texas after winter, due to the warm water temperatures, anglers are encouraged to keep up to their daily bag limit of 5 trout. Exceptions exist within special trout management zones on the Guadalupe River downstream of Canyon Lake, which often remains cool enough for rainbow trout to survive year-round. So get out there with your friends and family, spend time outdoors, enjoy the crisp air, and catch some feisty, colorful trout! If you’re new to trout fishing, watch these rainbow trout cleaning and cooking videos for tips on what to do with your catch. |

Where to Catch Rainbows
Neighborhood Fishin’ Lakes and State Parks
Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes offer families and other new anglers in and around big cities some of the best opportunities to catch rainbow trout. These lakes are frequently stocked during the season and offer plenty of amenities so anglers of all ages can enjoy a fun and relaxing day fishing and connecting in nature. Trout will also be stocked at several Texas state parks throughout Texas. Many state parks offer excellent fishing amenities such as fishing piers and shoreline access, cleaning stations, and equipment rentals for tackle and kayaks or canoes. As a bonus, anglers don’t need a fishing license to fish within a Texas state park. Reserving a day pass in advance of your visit to a Texas state park is highly recommended since parks are operating at limited capacity and many will reach their capacity limit. Day passes can be reserved online or by calling (512) 389-8900. |
More Locations
We will be stocking rainbow trout below several dams and spillways, which often have very cool water and provide excellent conditions for trout fishing. In addition to stocking the Guadalupe River downstream of Canyon Lake, TPWD also stocks rainbow trout in the Brazos River downstream of Possum Kingdom Lake, portions of the Frio and South Llano rivers, and in the Clear Fork of the Trinity River.
