Advanced Casting Class great for three members!!!

ADVANCED CASTING CLASS AT CYPRESS BEND

We covered a lot of territory in the advanced casting class on Saturday the 23rd of March.  Aerial mending, water mending, reach casts, shooting line, DOUBLE HAUL AND SINGLE HAUL and distance casting. Then we went to the River and did mending on the water, reach casts, and covered nymphing  and the stack mend which put you  in the feeding zone twice as long as a regular nymph cast.  Additionally we discussed streamer fishing and how to mend down stream to make the lure act like a minnow next to the bank on the far side.  It really makes a difference when you do these cast on the water instead of the grass.  Actual current in the river makes it much harder and you have to additionally learn line control and feeding line.  The small class allowed a lot of individual attention and I must say, at least one of our members can now DOUBLE HAUL.  The other 2 are on their way and will just take some practice and patience to get it going.  Thanks to those who showed up for this class!!!!

Tuesday Float on the Guadalupe by NBFF

On Tuesday we had and all day float from Rio to Rocky Beach.  We had 3 boats and 3 guides with the flows running at about 360cfs.  Lots of fish were caught using the standard 3 fly rig under and indicator.  Most of the bites were soft and barley moved the indicator.  Some of us caught some nice 16-18 rainbows and one good brown was caught.   Thanks to Ron DeMeyer for setting this up.  I’ll let the pictures do most of the talking!!

GETTING STARTED

ADVANCED CASTING WITH MIKE: SATURDAY MARCH 23RD AT CYPRESS BEND PARK

  • SATURDAY MARCH 23: Advanced Casting with Mike from 9-11:30 at the Cypress Bend Park. This class will focus on Ariel Mending, on the water mending, curve casts, slack line casts and accuracy and distance. One of the casts will show you how to double your time in the feeding zone when nymphing!!!!!!!!! Rods and reels are available if requested.Cost is free for NBFF members and $10 for non- members.  However, if you join the club that day by joining the IFF, the cost will be free.
  • You should wear waders or be prepared to wade, because all these casts and mends are best done on the water.  You can always do the casts from the bank, but will not get the same results as in the water.
  • We will meet at the parking lot opposite the covered area and go the to the field and river from there.

CASTING WITH MIKE ON SATURDAY THE 2ND OF MARCH

It was a little chilly and the wind was blowing moderately, but 7 intrepid souls(Jeff O’Bara, Gary Nyland, Dewitt Bebout, Ron DeMeyer, Dick Holte, Pamela Jennings, Bill Baker and Brien John) showed up for the casting class.  We focused on basics to include grip, stance, constant acceleration to a stop and mastering the 4 part cast.  We also had a Skagit rig that we were introduced to and got to cast that too.  As the instructor, I felt there was a lot of improvement in the individual casters after we reviewed the basics and reinforced the muscle memory for the basic cast.  Hope to see you all and more on March the 23rd for the advanced casting class held at the same time and place.
